A devastating explosion at a law enforcement facility in the Kashmir region under Indian control has led to the deaths of nine persons and wounding to thirty-two others, according to authority reports.
The event happened when a cache of confiscated explosives inadvertently exploded during handling procedures.
The explosion took place on Friday night at the Nowgam police station, where detonation agents confiscated in Faridabad in the northern state of Haryana were being stored temporarily.
Regional law enforcement head stated that the blast materials were scheduled for technical investigation when a "deeply regrettable" incident during management led to their explosion at approximately 23:20 local time.
Police authorities confirmed that this was an "unintentional explosion" and not a militant action. "Alternative theories regarding the origin of this event is unwarranted," stressed the law enforcement head during a journalist meeting.
The police station experienced severe damage from the detonation, with adjacent buildings also being affected by the powerful blast.
Numerous cars were "covered in blaze and turned into burned shells, with fragments distributed across the area," according to official reports.
"The intensity of the blast was so powerful that some body parts were found in close-by residences, approximately 100-200 metres away the security post," stated an official source.
The bulk of the casualties were law enforcement personnel, along with technical investigation team, two investigative imaging experts, and a garment worker who was with the team.
The area's Administrative Head stated commiserations and announced that an inquiry had been directed into the catastrophic occurrence.
"I have ordered a inquiry to ascertain the cause of the inadvertent detonation. Profoundly distressed by the death of valuable individuals due to profoundly sorrowful inadvertent detonation at Nowgam security post in Srinagar. My condolences to the bereaved families. I hope for speedy recovery of the injured," stated the leader on social media.
