Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a thrilling plot including angels, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in influence within the urban setting.
Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.
The Soldiers Table Revealed
Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of heroes who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.
The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that maintaining everyone at the same party would be impossible.
This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.
The Nature of the Soldiers Table
As described by the DM, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.
Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might look out of place, but the actions of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.
A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.
The antagonist then settled his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.
Personal Motivations
Additionally, each character has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:
- The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, wants retribution.
- Kattigan knows the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
- The warrior and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
- Yet, their position as important members in the powerful family could enable the party reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.
Wanted and Hunted
In addition, all of them are wanted by the powers that govern the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:
- The rogue and The character are notorious outlaws.
- The warrior and The healer betrayed the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
- The target is marked for death by House Halovar.
This means them few options but to travel to Timmony in quest for the antagonist.
