During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
