The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."
He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
