The English along with Welsh Pitted Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
