No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
