New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his intention to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, labeling him a âdeceptive figure and a liarâ and alleging of having âa history of marginalizing Black political contenders.â However, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.
âIt is crucial to energize the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how important this race is,â Adams remarked.
He added, âResidents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and Iâm going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and organizations and Iâm going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them engaged.â
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest worldwide and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adamsâs cooperation with federal immigration raids across New York City.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, âI'm meeting Andrew this evening.â
The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a contentious candidate debate.
