Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
