"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays caused by climate and other issues.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak since the shutdown began.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.
